Abstract Collagraphs

Since graduating from Northumbria University Fine Art Degree in 2004 I have been working on a number of creative projects focusing either on music or fine art.

Over the past 12 months I have become increasingly interested in the collagraphic printing process. Collagraphy is a relief printing process (an intaglio process). A printing plate is created using collage techniques, my own compositions are achieved by using card, tile adhesive, PVA, masking and parcel tape, organic matter, carborundum and miscellaneous found objects  to control the quantity of ink ‘held’ on the plate (the contrast) and an assortment of visual textures. I use oil based professional printing inks and mediums on fabriano paper although the use of older papers has also created a pleasing aesthetic. These materials are sourced from Hawthorn Print Making Supplies.

Recent works have investigated the creative potential of mark making in print using mediums. I have experimented broadly with mediums that effect the translucency of the ink. Looking at these new works and my earlier acrylic paintings this process has forced me to work in new ways and think about different types of 2d shapes and colour combinations. Whereas the moulded acrylic paintings were largely bio-morphic these have a stronger geometric tendency… although I still work with a combination of harmonious and complimentary colours.
