Another Collagraph comes online…

“Cell Number One” (2009) Collagraph on paper by James William Nicholson is an experiment in composition.

Looking at other websites with round collagraphs there seems to be a strong link between circular compositions and subjects relating to the spiritual world. This could be connected to the idea that the circle in design conveys the notion of an eternal line (whilst the square represents the physical world with boundaries and limitations).

Cell no.1

We know that cells exist whilst they remain invisible to the naked eye… The cell, a basic building block in biology, is something we know exists whereas anything spiritial relates to faith. I like the play between what we know and have proof of, and what we believe and have faith in. Using a ’spiritual’ composition for something that is  everyday rather than divine or mystical is an interesting proposition.

musings on garageband…

Cakewalk on the PC does pretty much the same as Garageband except you have to set up a load of hardware with Cakewalk and Garageband doesn’t leave you with an unpleasant after-taste of failure.

This morning I’ve been toying with beats (and despite my gfs protestations) I seem to be making progress. Once I have a number of time signatures down I intend having some serious playtime and exploring the potential to make layered sound. This will provide welcome space and with some time alone with the Macbook i’ll be able to (hopefully) create demos of  songs and song ideas that in some cases have been swilling around in my head for years.

Not unconnected to this with the Easter holidays from school around the corner the chance to record some tracks with long time friend, guitarist and sideburn afficianado David Haskett may finally come, or it’ll be a shambles one of the two.
